Time for some Conservatory Makeover

February 23rd, 2012

conservatories

Conservatory makeover- I am finally putting it across my blog. Actually I recently met a lady while travelling who asked me eagerly about Conservatories when her eyes fell on my project file. She was keen to know something about renovating a conservatory. She lived in a traditional home made in 18th century down the street and was obsessed with it because it was made by her late grandfather. There was a huge Victorian conservatory attached with the house. I saw the pictures and it was pretty old. Well, I answered to her questions and made up my mind to share it here.

Old conservatories tend to look tired and out dated with time. If you have a conservatory that is too old for maintenance or repair then here is what you can do? I am going to discuss steps that you can take depending on the current condition of your conservatory.

1. Upgrade: If a certain part of your conservatory has worn out with time, then upgrading that particular part will be a good idea. For instance if your conservatory’s roof has become fragile with elapsing time, you can upgrade just the roofs. Earlier conservatory roofs were made from polycarbonate which is less thermal efficient and produces a lot of noise when it rains or snows hard. This roof can be replaced by new roofing with double glazing but this depends on the conservatory side walls or frame.  If the frames are still in good condition, you can consider installing the new roofing on it. Otherwise it will be risky.

2. Replace it: Now this can be done when the material used in the making of the conservatory has weakened with time. But the base or foundation is still strong. Using the existing foundation, a new conservatory of exactly the same dimensions can be erected on it. This will be considerably more convenient as you need not take permissions from the planning commission because you are not changing the dimensions of the structure. Using the same base will also save a good amount on the total cost.

3. Rebuilding: This is the last thing that can be done to give it a makeover or should I say Complete Makeover. When the conservatory has become totally useless or weak, it has to be demolished in order to make a completely new conservatory on its place.  This is similar to building a new conservatory from scratch but it just adds on the demolishing section. Now you can choose the walls, roofs of your taste. But be sure that if you are going to build a conservatory of bigger size than the existing one, then you will have to get prior approval from the planning commission.

So, now you know what should be done with your old and rusty conservatory.

Myths about building Conservatories

February 20th, 2012

smaller conservatories

Sometimes I come across questions and force me to lift up my one eyebrow and ask what? People have so many false notions about building conservatories. They sometimes take it for granted. After a continuous attack of these myths I finally made up my mind to bust them. So here are some myth busters for my readers:

Myth# 1 Building smaller conservatories do not require approval from planning commission.

Now this is not true at all. It does not matter whether your conservatory is big or small. If it is required in your area, it applies to you as well. Planning Commission has different criteria for different areas, so before planning to build a conservatory enquire about permission formalities in your area. Constructing a conservatory without prior approval is like attracting trouble later on and in worst cases, you might have to demolish your conservatory.

Myth# 2 Conservatories must be built on south facing walls

Again this is not a compulsion. It is possible to abide to this direction rule for every home. Moreover, conservatories facing the south direction will get heat for longer durations and may get extra heated up in summers. So, one must decide the conservatory’s direction depending on the orientation of the house. At the end, it should suffice its main purpose of adding extension and beauty to the house. No matter which direction it faces. And if you get a south facing conservatory, make sure that you have necessary provisions for the summers, because your conservatory will get extra light throughout the day.

Myth# 3 You can save money by building your conservatory yourself

I am not denying that DIY Conservatories will not save money, but that does not mean every one can do that. If you are not good at DIY projects or construction, the consequences can be really bad. Thought DIY kits come with a construction plan to guide you through the project, but this is easy only for those who have experience in building things up. For a newbie, it will be nothing more than a diagram. You will end up hurting yourself and wasting your money as well. So I would advice to go for professional installers if you are not a DIY expert.

Myth# 4 All conservatories get hotter in summer and cooler in winters

This is the silliest myth of all. It is based on a very simple principle; if your conservatory gets more sunlight in summer then it will get warmer. But this does not imply to every conservatory. With advancing technology, we have ideas to make conservatories much better than before. If you have a conservatory that is facing south or getting excess sunlight throughout the day, then consider using blinds, tinted or double glazed roofs and windows and an air cooling system. It will really help. And in case of winters a heating system and properly insulated conservatory will do the magic.
